MISSOURI OUTDOORS

ENJOY THE FUN

President Truman is honorable namesake of the largest man-made reservoir in central Missouri.  In conjunction with Harry S. Truman State Park of which has prime fishing and its surrounding 'public use' hunting areas, our home-base hunting grounds are mainly in Henry and Benton counties for my husband and me due to familiarity of the region.   Fishing at its core, Missouri's Department of Conservation regulates all land and wildlife management that results in Missouri's claim to an abundance of game.  With over 55,600 acres of water surface, 958 miles of shoreline Truman Lake Reservoir has a plethora of coves, sandy banks and fishing holes out-of-the-public-eye.  Those little-known places are our favorites as any fisherman always tries to obtain.  Very rough back country, even small ridges in the Ozarks, cliffs can be deadly at night.  Boating deep into land-locked off-shore timber there, my husband and I hunt more deer and flocks of turkey than in the urban counties to the north.  Don' believe for one second, the urban counties isn't wildlife just because they are 'city' deer.  Missouri Dept. of Conservation holds managed bow hunting and rifle hunts to cull the herds in efforts to prevent car-deer accidents.  This isn't a guide service for Missouri hunting and recreation, but gives a backdrop of where my husband and I hunt and fish, .

The US Army Corps of Engineers manages corps land, terrain that reaches into four counties and nearly 60,000 acres of prime hunting bottom land.  Deer and wild turkey hunting is a real challenge in the Ozarks' rich crop fields, CRP, creek bottoms and flood plains of the Osage River and Tebo Creek valley and the heavy forest of the Northern Ozark Mountain region.  More than 8,800 acres of timber were left standing in the lake to improve aquatic habitat, and also very treacherous maneuvering after nightfall through the maze of towering bare tree trunks.

Created specifically for flood control, it's steeped in the history of Osage Indians, explorers, fur trappers, traders and settlers. Clear waters nationally known for its excellent crappie and bass fishing also yield many catfish, so delicious on a fork... We're drawn to Truman for the deep timber that holds the promise of trophy deer, and investing time and resources to follow the unbeaten paths has yielded success for us both.
Its dramatic bluffs and vibrant summer and fall colors inspired my photos and most of my sportswoman tales.  Truman's Tebo Creek is ideal for canoeing while Bald Eagles fetch fish from the creek.  Almost surreal, it's such a quiet place for bow hunting, and fishing even in the winter, power from Truman Dam helps heat the water lengthening the season of shad and crawdads, means more fish on a line.  My husband and I will attest to great baitfish and catfishing.  Many a hot summer day has proven productive filling our freezers.

No better way to spend a crisp, gorgeous morning at Truman Reservoir than viewing the turning colors of leaves of the treelined hills.  Just somethin' about scooting quietly across the water, keeping my eyes peeled for deer that emerge from the forest, standing on the sand...

He brags as delighted as if he'd captured Moby Dick, burned in our memories is the highlight of 2006 as this monster laid in a log that I tripped on wading back to the boat!  So much for my beer...  Shaking like a tree branch in a thunderstorm, I couldn't even wrap my arms around 'im as my husband held 'im..
Nowhere to stow 'im, Mastuh's catfish was released unscathed.  It was gone with a swooaflip of its tail !!
